What's Happening - October 2024
You know what's really spooky? The idea that you might not back Hero of Legend #2 on Kickstarter before it's too late.
Hero of Legend - Chapter 2 is on Kickstarter! Welcome to my monthly newsletter, giving you updates on the things I’ve been lettering, reading and writing this month.
What am I writing?
I don't know if you've heard, but Hero of Legend is on Kickstarter. And let me tell you, it really, truly, is on Kickstarter. Don't believe me? Check it out for yourself!
I'm really proud of this issue and as of this newsletter arriving in your inbox there are only about 3 days left to back it.
This campaign has been a bit slower than our campaign for Chapter 1. I think there a lot of reasons for that, which I'll try to get into in next month's newsletter. But I'm hoping we can still at least match what we did for #1, if not surpass it! Especially in our number of backers.
We're currently working on some of our stretch goals, like adding an extra colored page to the end of the issue (one that wasn't included in the version posted to my website!) We're also less than 20 backers away from getting a postcard sized version of this print out to everyone who backs at a physical level for this campaign:
And if we hit that, there's also a stretch goal to print off some stickers with the following sketches and our logo:
So if you haven't backed yet, I'd love for you to check it out. And in case you missed the 30 or so links I posted above, here it is one more time.
What am I lettering?
As I'm writing this, I'm currently taking a break from finishing up the letters for Sinner Takes All #1. I really love this book, and I'm really proud of the work I'm doing on it. I think Damien Becton's writing and Sunando C's art are really something special, but I'm also pretty proud of how the lettering is turning out. This is a book that lets me stretch my wings and do a little something different with the lettering, which I always appreciate.
A lot of comics, and a lot of creators, prefer a more workman like approach for their books. And there are a lot of books where a standard balloon shape, tail and dialogue font are going to be the best fit for the book. I don't ever feel like I need to try and be ostentatious just for the sake it. Fundamentally, I think lettering should serve the book it's in. But there's something special about projects where the best way to serve the story is to do something that is a bit more out there.
Anyway, here is another Kickstarter comic aside from Hero of Legend that I think is worth your time. This time, not something made by me!
Sunken Kingdom
I am not in anyway involved in this book, but it's being made by one of my longtime collaborators and favorite indie comic writers so I wanted to give it a shout out. Dan Tappan is a fantastic, exciting and thoughtful comic writer. I worked with him first on the anthology of water based horror stories A Lungful of Brine, which you should definitely check out and I believe is available as part of this campaign. Here's the synopsis of this book:
Centuries ago, Poseidon flooded the earth in an event known as The Great Drowning and transformed humanity to breathe the sea. Now they worship the Sea-God for sparing humankind. But human society struggles to survive the depths, for there are many dangers in the murky waters of the deep. Things like ocean predators, horrors of the abyss, and a devastating plague.
Sir Henri de Requin, a violent, devout, yet ultimately misguided knight, is tasked with finding a holy relic said to save humanity. The man is so adept at killing that he's followed by sacred remora, ready to gorge on the viscera of his enemies as if he were a shark.
I'm really excited to read this one, and I hope you'll take a minute to check it out. They're currently less than $200 away from their goal!
Some fun lettering:
That's it?!
Yeah, well, look. We've got a kickstarter running, cut me some slack.
Anyway, bye!
