What's Happening - October 2023
Oops, no September
Wow! It’s October! And like, the second week of October at that.
Welcome to my monthly newsletter, giving you updates on the things I’ve been lettering, reading and writing this month.
What am I lettering?
September was a pretty slow month for me lettering wise, mostly because I was completely overwhelmed by my day job. October is going to be a heavier month for me with lettering, which is cool for me, but not very exciting for this newsletter because I’m not able to talk about most of it.
But, coming into October, there is one cool new Kickstarters that I’m attached to that you can check out:
Proctor #1
The first issue of Proctor is currently live on Kickstarter! This is a supernatural action/adventure horror story with a strong focus on character. Here’s the slightly longer pitch:
PROCTOR's protagonist, Samantha Hale, can't seem to get out of her own way, but what is a girl with an Art History degree and a fondness for binge drinking to do when all she's ever been good at is smashing monster skulls? When her mother, one of the most powerful witches in the North East, stumbles upon the ancient Staff of Kings that Sam's father hid before he died, Sam finds herself on a globetrotting, dimension-jumping adventure in an attempt to keep the staff safe. From finding foreign help in the streets of Verona to welcoming assistance from one of the strongest Voodoo clans in history, the fate of Sam's journey rests in her ability to swallow her pride, make new friends, and fight off the teams of supernatural assassins hot on her trail
This is a series that’s perfect for October, the spookiest of the months. You’ve got the rest of the month to back it, but why wait?
Some Fun Lettering
What am I reading?
A Guest in the House
Emily Carroll is one of the best horror creators currently working in comics, full stop. But even knowing that, A Guest in the House is something special. There’s an inherent messiness most of us have come to accept in comics. Most comics are planes being constructed midair by small teams with barely enough time or money to make the damn things, let along take the time to give them enough polish to be deserving of being called a “novel.” I say all of this as someone who loves to both read and make comics! And sometimes the messiness is a good thing. But the material conditions of comic creation mean that that most creators simply don’t have time to craft something that feels truly cohesive.
A Guest in the House is different. This is a book that feels like that time has been taken, where all the pieces fit together perfectly, but not in a way that leaves it feeling cold. There are a million things I could write about this book. The use of color, the pacing, the lettering. It’s a fantastic comic, and if you’re looking for something to read this October, please check this out.
What am I writing?
Not much! September was pretty hectic, and October seems to be continuing that trend. Unfortunately, when things start to get busy, my own personal writing is the first thing that tends to fall off. It’s simple math. Day job and lettering stuff has hard deadlines that need to be met, person writing has soft deadlines that nobody but myself cares about. Still slowly plugging away at Untitled Fantasy Series, which is has been fun to work on, but not much else to say about it besides that! Going to
Into the Deep is still progressing. As of writing this newsletter, we’re 3/4ths of the way though the book, which is pretty wild to think about. At the rate we’re completing pages, there’s a chance we get the book done earlier than expected, which I, personally, think is pretty cool! Aside from that, though, not much to say this October.
Is that it?
Yep! Bye.
